IBADAN – In a major legal and political setback for Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Federal High Court in Ibadan has nullified the National Convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held in November 2025 and sacked the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Aminu Turaki.

Delivering judgment on Friday, Justice Uche Agomoh held that the convention was conducted in “flagrant disobedience” to two subsisting judgments of the same court. The court declared that seeking judicial approval for actions taken in defiance of court orders was “an exercise in futility.”

Consequently, Justice Agomoh set aside all decisions made at the convention and barred Aminu Turaki (SAN) and other members who emerged at the event from parading themselves as officials of the party. The court affirmed that the Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu-led Caretaker Committee is the only lawful governing body of the PDP that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should recognize, pending a valid convention.

“This suit is a brazen attempt by the applicant to legitimize its illegalities done in violation of subsisting court orders. I cannot allow that,” Justice Agomoh stated.

The ruling originates from a suit filed by the Turaki group seeking validation of the convention. The court’s decision reinforces an earlier suspension of the convention ordered by a Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2024. Counsel to the PDP Caretaker Committee, Ferdinand Orbih (SAN), described the judgment as a “boost for Nigeria’s democracy” that affirms the rule of law over political expediency.

Disclaimer: This report details a significant court ruling in an ongoing intra-party legal dispute. The judgment is subject to appeal by the affected party members.
