Reconciliation Move: Atiku Meets Amaechi in Crucial Post-ADC Presidential Primary Talks to Heal Party Divisions

In a highly significant and closely watched political development, ADC presidential primary winner Atiku Abubakar has met with Rotimi Amaechi — his main rival in the recently concluded and deeply controversial African Democratic Congress presidential primary — in what political observers are describing as a crucial first step toward reconciliation and the restoration of unity within the ADC ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The meeting between the two heavyweights comes against the backdrop of Amaechi’s formal rejection of the ADC primary results — a dramatic move that, alongside fellow aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen’s boycott of the result announcement, cast a long and damaging shadow over the legitimacy of Atiku’s primary victory and threatened to fracture the ADC’s opposition presidential campaign before it had truly begun.

Sources familiar with the discussions describe the atmosphere of the meeting as frank, respectful, and constructive — with both men reportedly acknowledging the need to prioritise the larger national mission of offering Nigerians a credible and united opposition alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid over personal grievances arising from the contested primary process.

Atiku, who secured a commanding 1,855,787 votes against Amaechi’s 509,397 votes in the direct primary held across Nigeria between May 25–27, 2026, is understood to have reached out to his rival in a spirit of statesmanship and political maturity — recognising that a divided ADC heading into 2027 would be a gift to the ruling APC and a betrayal of the millions of Nigerians who are desperately hoping for a stronger opposition voice.

Amaechi, whose rejection of the primary results was anchored on allegations of widespread irregularities and manipulation, is said to have used the meeting to formally present his grievances to Atiku — with the former Vice President reportedly listening carefully and pledging to ensure that all concerns are addressed transparently and credibly through the party’s official dispute resolution channels.
Political analysts describe the Atiku-Amaechi meeting as an absolutely critical juncture in the ADC’s post-primary journey — stressing that the party’s ability to unite behind a single candidate, rebuild internal trust, and project a coherent and credible presidential campaign depends heavily on whether this reconciliation process produces genuine outcomes or merely cosmetic agreements that mask deeper unresolved tensions.

The question of whether Hayatu-Deen — the third major aspirant who boycotted the result announcement — will be brought into the reconciliation process is also being closely watched, with party insiders suggesting that Atiku’s camp is actively exploring channels to engage all aggrieved parties in a comprehensive healing exercise.

ADC party leadership has welcomed the meeting between Atiku and Amaechi, describing it as a positive and encouraging sign of the party’s commitment to internal democracy, reconciliation, and the kind of mature political behaviour that Nigerians deserve from their opposition leaders.
