…Ex-Rep Who Chaired House Committee on Environment Seeks Abia Central Senate Seat
Rep. Emeka Atuma’s previous service in the House of Representatives was not simply about occupying a legislative seat. It placed him within a period when Nigeria was strengthening its institutional response to some of the country’s most serious environmental challenges.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the period saw the emergence of important environmental institutions and legislation, including the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) framework established by the 2006 Act and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) established under the 2007 Act.
NOSDRA was created to coordinate the implementation of Nigeria’s oil-spill contingency framework, while NESREA was established with responsibility for enforcing environmental standards and regulations. These are not merely names in old legislative documents. They represent institutions that continue to shape how Nigeria responds to oil spills, pollution, environmental degradation, and regulatory compliance.
For the Abia Central Senatorial Zone, that history matters because it demonstrates that Atuma’s legislative experience extends beyond constituency politics into areas of national policy and institutional development. That is the kind of experience he now brings into the conversation about representation in the Senate.
The argument for Atuma, therefore, is not simply that he wants to return to the National Assembly.
