Report Details Terrorist Strongholds and Network of Armed Groups Across Nine Nigerian States

A comprehensive investigation has revealed that a network of armed groups, blending local banditry with foreign jihadist tactics, has established strongholds across nine Nigerian states.

According to the report, the states of Sokoto, Kwara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kogi, and Niger are severely affected, with communities facing relentless kidnappings, raids, and violent attacks.

The investigation identified that local bandits have absorbed foreign fighters fleeing instability in neighboring Sahel nations, leading to more coordinated and lethal operations. Key groups named include the ideologically-driven Lakurawa jihadists in Sokoto and the Mahmuda factions operating in Kwara and Niger.

Unlike highly structured terror organizations, these networks are fluid and adaptable, often identified by their kingpins or the forest corridors they control. This allows them to launch attacks across state lines without a easily traceable pattern, complicating security efforts.

The crisis has led to mass displacement, collapsed local economies, and forced school closures, creating a multifaceted security challenge that requires a coordinated regional response.
