The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a suspect after recovering an unauthorized firearm cleverly concealed inside a loaf of bread during a routine stop-and-search operation in Port Harcourt.
The suspect, identified as Braya Nanas, was apprehended along the Azikiwe Road axis near Red Cross Junction when police operatives intercepted and searched a vehicle in which he was travelling as a passenger.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, officers discovered a Browning pistol hidden inside a loaf of bread during the search. Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm had no visible serial number, raising concerns about its origin and possible intended use.
The suspect allegedly admitted ownership of the weapon and informed investigators that he purchased it in Okrika for N800,000.
ASP Agabe said the operation was carried out in line with the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, to strengthen security and curb criminal activities across the state.
Reacting to the discovery, the police commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, packages, or activities to security agencies.
He also warned members of the public against transporting, storing, or accepting items whose contents are unknown, noting that criminals are increasingly adopting deceptive methods to evade detection.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
