Senator Akobundu Praises 2026 Budget’s Security Focus, Backs Single Budget Cycle

ABUJA — Senator Austin Akobundu has commended President Bola Tinubu’s 2026 Appropriation Bill, highlighting its strong emphasis on tackling insecurity and its move toward a single budget cycle for better fiscal discipline.

Speaking to journalists after the budget presentation on Friday, Akobundu described the N58.1 trillion “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity” as a positive step, especially given its N5.41 trillion allocation to defence and security.

Senator Akobundu stated the following reason on the budget.

1· The budget prioritizes ridding the country of insecurity “as much as possible.”
2· It aims to end multiple overlapping budgets by ensuring the 2024 budget closes in December, 30% of the 2025 budget is implemented by March 2026, and the remaining 70% rolls into 2026—creating a single, streamlined budget cycle from April 2026.
3· The Senate will conduct a “diagnostics study” of the budget principles and make adjustments to ensure it is realistic and implementable.

Akobundu also noted the significant allocations to infrastructure (N3.56 trillion), education (N3.52 trillion), and health (N2.48 trillion), promising thorough legislative scrutiny to align the budget with national priorities and revenue projections.
