SERAP Drags NNPCL to Court Over ₦5.9bn Rebranding Cost

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has instituted legal action against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over the alleged expenditure of ₦5.9 billion on its rebranding exercise.

SERAP is seeking a court order compelling the state-owned oil company to account for the reported spending and provide Nigerians with detailed information on how the funds were utilised.

According to the organisation, the lawsuit is aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the management of public resources, particularly at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.

The rights group argued that citizens have a constitutional and legal right to know how public funds are spent by government-owned institutions.

The case has reignited public debate over government expenditure, with critics questioning the necessity of such a huge amount for a rebranding exercise, while others insist that the matter should be thoroughly examined by the courts.

NNPCL has yet to issue an official response to the lawsuit at the time of filing this report.

The outcome of the case is expected to test the country’s commitment to openness, fiscal responsibility, and citizens’ access to information concerning the management of national assets.
