ABUJA – The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the long-running murder case against former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha.
Al-Mustapha was accused of orchestrating the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola. She was assassinated in Lagos on June 4, 1996.
In a unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient to sustain the conviction. The court thereby affirmed the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal which had discharged and acquitted him.
The ruling brings a definitive legal end to a case that has spanned over two decades, stirring significant public interest and emotion.
