MINNA, NIGERIA – Suspected bandits have bombed a critical bridge linking two communities in Niger State, cutting off access and heightening fears of further attacks in the troubled North-Central region.
The bridge, located in the Munya Local Government Area, was destroyed in the early hours of Monday using explosives, according to security sources. The attack has effectively isolated the affected communities, disrupting movement, commercial activities, and access to emergency services.
Residents reported hearing a loud explosion before dawn, only to discover the bridge had been severely damaged. No casualties were recorded in the incident, but locals fear the attackers may be planning further assaults on nearby villages.
“This is a deliberate attempt to cripple our community and make us vulnerable,” a resident told CDA News Nigeria.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that a joint security team has been deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further attacks. The military has also been alerted to provide reinforcement.
The bombing comes amid escalating insecurity in Niger State, where bandits have frequently targeted remote communities for kidnapping and extortion. Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has condemned the attack and called for increased military presence in the region.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
