PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA – The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has commended ongoing road projects in Rivers State, while issuing a stern warning against the indiscriminate parking of trucks on highways across the country.
Speaking during an inspection tour of federal road projects in the state, Umahi expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work on key roads, including the Port Harcourt–Aba expressway and other strategic routes. He praised the contractors for adhering to specifications and urged them to maintain the momentum to meet completion deadlines.
However, the minister raised concerns over the growing menace of articulated vehicles parking on highways, describing the practice as a major cause of road deterioration and a threat to safety.
“Truck drivers must desist from parking on federal highways. These roads are not parking lots. We will not hesitate to impound vehicles found violating this directive,” Umahi warned.
He called on state governments and relevant authorities to provide designated truck parks to accommodate heavy-duty vehicles, noting that collaboration between federal and state agencies is essential to addressing the challenge.
The minister’s visit is part of a nationwide assessment of federal road infrastructure, with a focus on ensuring project timelines are met and quality standards maintained.
