Tinubu, Trump to Meet Amid Tensions Over Religious Violence in Nigeria

ABUJA – A high-level diplomatic meeting between Presidents Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Donald Trump of the United States is being arranged to address recent tensions over allegations of religious persecution.

The planned discussion follows President Trump’s public designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” where he accused radical Islamists of conducting a “mass slaughter” of Christians. Trump had previously threatened consequences, including a halt to U.S. aid.

In response, President Tinubu firmly rejected the characterization, stating it does not reflect Nigeria’s reality. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting all citizens, regardless of faith, and highlighted ongoing engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders.

According to a presidential aide, the two leaders share a common interest in fighting insurgency. The forthcoming meeting, which may occur in Abuja or Washington, will aim to resolve differences regarding the specific targeting of religious groups by terrorists and deepen cooperation on security.
