ONITSHA, NIGERIA – Traders at a popular plumbing materials market in Anambra State are counting huge losses after a midnight fire razed shops and warehouses, destroying goods worth millions of naira.
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Monday at the market located along the Onitsha-Enugu expressway, gutted several lock-up shops and containerized stores stocked with plumbing fittings, pipes, and other construction materials. Firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service arrived at the scene after a delayed response due to accessibility challenges, managing to contain the blaze from spreading further.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical spark, though authorities have not ruled out other possibilities. No casualties were reported.
One of the affected traders, who spoke to CDA News Nigeria amid the smoldering ruins, described the incident as devastating.
“I have lost everything I’ve worked for over a decade. This is a massive setback,” the trader lamented.
The Anambra State government has pledged to investigate the cause of the fire and assist affected traders. Meanwhile, market leaders have called for improved fire safety measures and regular inspections across major markets in the state to prevent future occurrences.
