SOKOTO, NIGERIA – The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has dismissed as false reports claiming that 150 bandits drowned while crossing the Sokoto River, describing the viral story as completely unfounded.
In a statement issued on Monday, NIWA’s Sokoto State Area Manager refuted the widely circulated social media reports, clarifying that no such incident occurred on the state’s waterways. The authority urged members of the public to disregard the misinformation and rely only on official sources for accurate updates.
“There is no record or evidence to support the claim that 150 bandists drowned in any river within Sokoto State. This is fake news,” the statement read.
The reports, which gained traction over the weekend, had suggested that the bandits met their demise while attempting to escape a military operation. However, security agencies in the state also confirmed that no such incident was recorded in recent operations.
NIWA called on citizens to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary alarm or misrepresent the security situation in the region. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety on inland waterways across the country.
