KANO — Four Almajiri (Qur’anic school pupils) have tragically died after reportedly consuming food suspected to have been contaminated in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the affected students were from the Tsangaya of Malam Iliyasu Mai Tsangaya, located in Kadage Sharifai . They were rushed to Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical attention after falling ill following the meal . Despite efforts to save them, the students reportedly died at the hospital on Sunday night, August 16, 2026 .
The National Chairman of the Tsangaya Media Network, Alaramma Sani Musa Nuhu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday . However, the statement did not disclose the exact nature of the food consumed or the specific substance suspected to have caused the poisoning .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the remains of the deceased were subsequently buried after approval was obtained from the District Head (Dagaci) and the Divisional Police Officer . As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement concerning the incident .
The tragedy has drawn attention to the welfare and safety of students in Tsangaya schools across the state, with community members calling for answers and measures to prevent a similar occurrence .
