MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA – Nigerian troops have repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Borno State, neutralizing 38 insurgents in a fierce counter-operation, military sources have confirmed.
The attack occurred on Friday when ISWAP fighters attempted to overrun a military base in the Gubio Local Government Area. Troops of Operation Hadin Kai engaged the terrorists in a gun battle that lasted several hours, repelling the assault and inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.
A military source disclosed that 38 terrorists were neutralized, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. Troops also recovered a cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, and ammunition.
“Our troops displayed gallantry and professionalism. The attempted attack was decisively dealt with,” the source said.
No casualty figures were released for the military personnel involved. The Nigerian Army has intensified clearance operations in the area to prevent further attacks.
The successful repulsion comes amid sustained military pressure on terrorist enclaves in the Lake Chad region and Sambisa Forest. The military urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
