TUC Rejects FG’s N70,000 Allowance

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed N70,000 transport allowance, demanding an immediate salary increase for workers instead.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the TUC made this known in a statement on Wednesday by its President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary-General, N.A. Toro, following a National Administrative Council meeting. The congress argued that temporary wage awards are inadequate to address the worsening economic hardship.

The TUC proposed that the government raise the salary of the lowest-paid worker to N300,000 from the current N70,000 and apply the appropriate consequential adjustments to other levels, noting there is no maximum wage law in the country.

The congress also accused the government of failing to fulfil its 2023 wage award obligations and neglecting a seven-month-old agreement on the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers under JOHESU.

“Negotiations of a new national minimum wage must not become an excuse for postponing urgent pay increment,” the TUC stated. The congress added that it is awaiting the outcome of its scheduled meeting with the Federal Government before deciding on its next line of action.
