Two Nigerians Killed in South Africa: FG Demands Probe, Protection for Citizens

The Federal Government has formally demanded that South African authorities protect the lives and property of Nigerians and other foreign nationals following the killing of two citizens in separate incidents.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg identified the victims as Amaramiro Emmanuel and Ekpenyong Andrew.

According to Consul-General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, Emmanuel died from injuries allegedly sustained after being beaten by personnel of the South African National Defence Force on April 20 in Port Elizabeth. Andrew was apprehended on April 19 by Tshwane Metro Police in Pretoria following an alleged altercation; his body was later discovered at the Pretoria Central Mortuary.

“We call on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Okey-Uche said. “No matter the allegations, there are lawful processes. Everyone should be presumed innocent and granted a fair hearing”.

The killings come amid escalating anti-foreigner tensions in South Africa, with planned protests in Gauteng Province. The South African government has promised to act firmly against those involved in xenophobic violence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, urged South Africa “to protect the lives and property of foreigners from fellow African countries currently residing in their country”.

The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa described the situation as “alarming,” warning of rising hostility, harassment, and alleged police brutality.
