The global ride-hailing giant announced its departure following a business review, marking the end of an era for the company that helped transform urban transportation in Nigeria.
Uber has officially wound down its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026, bringing an end to its 12-year presence in the country . The company, which launched in Lagos in 2014 before expanding to other major cities, announced the “tough decision” in an email to customers, stating it followed a “thorough review” of its business operations .
The company said its Help Centre will remain accessible to users until September 23 to assist with final account settlements and dispute resolutions .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the exit comes amid a broader global restructuring, with Uber cutting approximately 3,300 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, as it pivots towards autonomous vehicles and robotaxis . The company also simultaneously ended operations in Uganda, having previously exited Tanzania earlier this year .
However, industry participants say the departure cannot be viewed in isolation from the increasingly difficult economics of ride-hailing in Nigeria. The removal of fuel subsidies in 2023 sharply increased operating costs, while drivers have protested over unsustainable fares and high platform commissions . More than 2,500 ride-hailing apps have attempted to enter the Nigerian market since 2014, with the overwhelming majority failing to achieve scale . Platforms including Oga Taxi, Smart Ride, Gudride, and Easy Taxi have either shut down or become inactive .
Despite leaving Nigeria and Uganda, Uber stated it remains committed to Sub-Saharan Africa and will continue operating in other markets on the continent .
