IKWUANO, NIGERIA — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State and convener of the For Us By Us movement, Ugwumba Chika Ishionwu, has thrown his weight behind the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, condemning what he described as paid attacks aimed at tarnishing his image .
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ishionwu described the ongoing campaigns against the Deputy Speaker as politically motivated and driven by fear of his rising political stature and growing acceptance across Abia State and the entire South East region .
“I have watched with deep concern the coordinated attempts by certain interests to malign the image of our leader, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu. These attacks are clearly borne out of fear of his overwhelming popularity and the likelihood of his victory should he decide to contest any election in Abia State,” Ishionwu stated .
The APC stalwart noted that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as far back as May 23, 2023, issued a formal verification letter which clearly addressed and laid to rest the issues surrounding his NYSC records, affirming that there was no discrepancy or wrongdoing .
Ishionwu dismissed those behind the smear campaign as “political jobbers” who have nothing tangible to offer the people. He described Kalu as a leader whose commitment to legislative excellence and national development remains unwavering despite distractions .
“Those paying people to attack Benjamin Kalu are wasting their resources. No amount of propaganda, sponsored columns, or hatchet journalism can diminish the reputation of Benjamin Kalu or erode the love and goodwill he enjoys among the people of Abia State and the South East,” Ishionwu added .
The APC chieftain reassured the Deputy Speaker of his continued solidarity and support, urging him to remain focused on his national assignments and ignore the antics of those unsettled by his rising profile .
Ishionwu also called on those group been spornsored to tarnished the image of the Deputy Speaker to find something better and do for themselves.
