LONDON, UK — The United Kingdom has announced sweeping security measures, including airspace restrictions and road closures, ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Windsor Castle, where he will be hosted by King Charles III on March 18 and 19, 2026 .
Thames Valley Police, in collaboration with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), outlined a comprehensive security operation for the visit, which marks the highest level of diplomatic engagement hosted by the British monarchy .
Airspace Restrictions
While a permanent airspace restriction exists around Windsor Castle year-round, authorities will extend the no-fly zone on Wednesday, March 18, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. GMT to enhance security during the presidential visit .
Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit warned that any breach of the restrictions would constitute a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could lead to arrest .
“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not,” Hall stated .
Road Closures and Security Deployment
Road closures and parking restrictions will take effect from Tuesday, March 17, with possible temporary disruption to roads in and around Windsor during the visit . Several footways and pedestrian crossings in the town centre will also close periodically between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on March 17 and 18 to allow for ceremonial processions .
Police will deploy numerous officers with specialist capabilities, including search teams, the Mounted Section, roads policing units, and armed officers . Authorities will also utilize Windsor’s extensive CCTV network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, and other undisclosed security measures .
Public Advisory
Officers urged members of the public to support the security operation by remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity by calling 101 or speaking to officers on the ground. In case of immediate threat or emergency, the public should call 999 .
President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu will arrive in the UK on Wednesday, March 18, for the two-day state visit at the invitation of King Charles III . The visit is expected to strengthen UK-Nigeria relations following the strategic partnership agreement signed in November 2024 .
