The United Kingdom has announced an increase in the financial requirements for international students applying for study visas, a change that will affect prospective applicants, including Nigerians.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that under the revised rules introduced by the UK Home Office, applicants studying in London must demonstrate access to at least £1,570 per month in living expenses from November 30, 2026, up from the previous £1,529. For courses lasting nine months or longer, the maximum maintenance requirement will rise from £13,761 to £14,130, representing an increase of £369.
For students studying outside London, the financial threshold will also increase. The minimum monthly amount required will rise to £1,203 from £1,171, with the maximum nine-month requirement increasing from £10,539 to £10,827.
These amounts represent the minimum living expenses applicants must demonstrate and do not include tuition fees, the student visa application fee, or the Immigration Health Surcharge.
The UK remains a top destination for international students, with approximately 685,565 students enrolled in UK higher education institutions during the 2024/2025 academic year, contributing significantly to the UK economy.
