United States Congressman Bill Huizenga has accused the Nigerian government of failing to adequately address ongoing violence against Christian communities, advocating for targeted economic sanctions instead of military intervention.
In an interview with Arise News, Huizenga—who supports redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern—expressed alarm at the situation, warning that Nigeria risks repeating tragedies similar to those in Rwanda and South Sudan if decisive action isn’t taken.
“We were too late on Rwanda, we were too late on South Sudan. Let’s not be too late again on this one,” the Congressman stated, referencing attacks by Fulani militants and Islamist groups that have targeted both Christians and moderate Muslims.
While distancing himself from former President Trump’s recent suggestions of possible military action, Huizenga emphasized that economic pressure through sanctions would be more effective. “Sanctions really cut off the flow of money and travel,” he explained, noting this approach could disrupt financing for militant operations.
The Congressman criticized the Nigerian government’s response to the violence as dismissive and inadequate, stating that authorities need to demonstrate concrete actions to protect all citizens. He also warned that the ongoing insecurity is undermining Nigeria’s economic growth and discouraging foreign investment.
