The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a significant policy shift, ending the automatic extension of work permits for immigrants filing for renewal on or after October 30, 2025 .
The change affects Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) and is designed to enhance national security and public safety. According to DHS, the new rule allows U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to conduct complete background checks before granting an extension, improving fraud detection and screening out individuals who may pose a threat .
USCIS Director Joseph Edlow stated the policy refocuses the process on security over convenience, emphasizing that working in the U.S. is “a privilege, not a right” . The move does not affect permits automatically extended before the October 30 deadline. Limited exceptions will apply, including some cases under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) .
To avoid a lapse in work authorization, DHS advises applicants to file for renewal up to 180 days before their current permit expires
