A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring or recognizing the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) planned national convention.
Justice James Omotosho ruled that the PDP failed to comply with electoral laws, including conducting proper state congresses and providing the mandatory 21-day notice for meetings. The court found that correspondence signed solely by the national chairman without the secretary violated party regulations.
The judge advised the PDP to “do the needful” before proceeding with the convention scheduled for November 15-16 in Ibadan. The ruling represents a significant setback for Nigeria’s main opposition party ahead of crucial internal elections.
