Two senior United States lawmakers have strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s recent threat to launch military action against Nigeria.
In a joint statement, Congressman Gregory Meeks and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs described the threat as “irresponsible and reckless.” Both lawmakers are ranking members on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Africa Subcommittee.
They argued that the Trump administration’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” ignores the complex, multi-faceted nature of the violence in the country, which affects both Christians and Muslims.
“It is incredibly irresponsible of President Trump to threaten military action. Providing security support is one thing; threatening military intervention is another matter entirely,” the lawmakers stated, warning that such rhetoric risks involving the US in “another needless war.”
They also opposed the threat to cut aid, stating it would undermine critical humanitarian programs in Nigeria.
