In a joint statement led by Rep. Robert Aderholt, the legislators praised the move as a “bold and moral step” to address what they describe as the ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Rep. Aderholt stated the decision “gives hope to the people of Nigeria” and reaffirmed America’s role in defending religious freedom globally.
The lawmakers argued that extremist groups in Nigeria have claimed thousands of Christian lives annually. Rep. Chris Smith characterized the redesignation as a correction after the CPC status was “wrongly lifted” under the previous administration.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the U.S. assessment is based on “misrepresentation and misinformation,” maintaining that Nigeria’s security challenges are driven by banditry and insurgency, not religion.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has reiterated Nigeria’s constitutional commitment to religious liberty and tolerance, stating that the country’s internal reality does not reflect the claims of systemic religious persecution.
