At least 10 persons were injured and several vehicles vandalised when suspected political thugs invaded local government congresses organised by the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Oyo State on Saturday .
The PDP in Oyo State is currently split into two factions, one aligned with Wike and the other loyal to Governor Seyi Makinde . The Wike-backed faction, led by Chairman Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, was conducting its local government congresses when the violence erupted across multiple areas .
Attacks Across Multiple LGAs
Professor Akinoso confirmed the attacks in a telephone interview, stating that congresses were disrupted in Ibadan North, Ogbomoso South, Ibarapa Central (Igboora), and Akinyele local government areas .
The residence of a former deputy governor of the state, Barrister Hazeem Gbolarumi, located in the Bodija area of Ibadan North, was specifically targeted. Gbolarumi disclosed that the thugs arrived in about 15 buses and destroyed eight vehicles parked within his compound .
“I saw them. They came in 15 buses when the congress was going on and attacked us and destroyed about eight vehicles,” Gbolarumi stated .
Conflicting Casualty Figures
While Professor Akinoso initially reported about 10 persons attacked and several vehicles vandalised across the state , another report suggested the number of injured persons could be as high as 25, with properties worth millions of naira destroyed .
Police Response
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the police had received reports of the attacks. He noted that the violence occurred outside the congress venues .
“We received a report of the attack on the residence of a former governor of the state. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the arrest of the hoodlums. We are on top of the matter,” Ayanlade assured .
The attack further deepens the existing rift within the Oyo PDP as both factions continue to struggle for control of the party’s structure ahead of future elections .
