major political parties have begun courting internally displaced persons ahead of the 2027 general election, amid uncertainty over how millions of displaced Nigerians will participate in the polls.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that parties including the ADC, PDP, NDC, APM and SDP have all pledged plans to reach displaced voters, as March 2026 UNHCR data showed over 3.7 million Nigerians remain internally displaced due to insecurity across the North-East, North-West and North-Central.
ADC’s Bolaji Abdullahi vowed to mobilise votes directly in IDP camps to counter alleged APC rigging plans, while NDC’s Osa Director said the party was engaging INEC on special voting arrangements akin to diaspora voting. APM’s Abubakar Yusuf and SDP’s Mark Adebayo both promised intensified camp visits, while PDP backed extending the polling unit transfer window for IDPs.
However, in Niger State, displaced residents at the Gwada camp said returning to their ancestral lands, not voting, remains their priority, with several IDPs citing lost relatives and abandoned livelihoods. Plateau’s REC, Prof Samuel Egwu, disclosed INEC plans to establish IDP voting centres in nine local government areas under the Kampala Declaration obligations.
Similar disenfranchisement concerns were reported among Benue’s 219,477 IDPs and Borno’s remaining informal camp residents.
