Obasanjo, Jonathan, Shettima Arrive Anambra for Soludo’s Second-Term Inauguration

AWKA, NIGERIA — Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, arrived in Anambra State on Tuesday to attend the second-term inauguration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo at the newly renovated Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka .

The dignitaries landed at the Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, and were received by top government officials before proceeding to the inauguration venue

Also present at the event is former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, alongside several state governors including Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Traditional rulers from all 179 communities in Anambra State, as well as monarchs from other parts of Nigeria, are in attendance.

The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) mobilized members from all 326 political wards in the state to participate in the historic occasion.

Governor Soludo secured re-election on November 8, 2025, on the platform of APGA with an overwhelming mandate, polling 422,664 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 99,445 votes. Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) finished third with 37,753 votes.

In a sweeping outcome, Soludo won in all 21 local government areas of the state, underscoring the electorate’s confidence in his leadership. According to INEC data, 16 candidates contested the election, with 595,298 valid votes cast across the state’s 5,718 polling units

Security has been heavily tightened across Awka for the ceremony, with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, NSCDC, and FRSC deployed at strategic locations.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that security agencies were on full alert to ensure a peaceful ceremony.

Residents who spoke with newsmen expressed hope that the administration would consolidate gains recorded in infrastructure, security, and sanitation during the first term.

The governor and his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, marked the end of their first tenure on Sunday with an interdenominational thanksgiving service at the International Convention Centre, Awka, where Soludo thanked God and the people for their support and pledged to deliver more democratic dividends.
