LAGOS, NIGERIA — The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed claims by a faction loyal to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso that President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are sponsoring the party’s ongoing court cases, insisting that the litigations are a direct result of Kwankwaso’s “high-handedness” and attempts to hijack the party .
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos, the NNPP National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, described allegations by Kwankwaso’s associate, Elder Buba Galadima, that the APC was behind the party’s legal woes as “lazy, empty blackmail” .
“Was it Tinubu who made Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, attempt to hijack a party that gave him a free ticket to run? Kwankwaso and his group, who have been expelled, have continued to pursue court cases to take over the NNPP, causing defections among members,” Olaposi stated .
Condemnation of Allegations
The party condemned what it termed the “unfounded, mischievous” blackmail of President Tinubu and the APC, describing it as a “figment of lazy minds” . The NNPP emphasized that the allegations were dead on arrival and urged the public to disregard them .
Call for Defectors to Return
Despite the internal crisis, the NNPP declared that it remains “the beautiful bride of the 2027 general elections” and called on members who left due to the litigations to return and help rebuild the party.
The National Secretary reminded members that the party’s 2025 national convention in Lagos resolved that loyalty would be rewarded with automatic tickets for elected officials . He urged those who departed because of the “overbearing attitude of Kwankwaso and Galadima” to return and participate in the party’s rebuilding process.
E-Registration Underway
Olaposi disclosed that the party has commenced electronic registration of members in line with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines for the 2027 elections . He stressed that building a strong human structure is essential for the party’s success in the forthcoming general election .
“NNPP is a sister political party to all registered parties in Nigeria and remains committed to being a responsible partner for the nation’s progress. Our mission is not about fighting others for politics or power, which belongs to God, but to serve the people of Nigeria,” the statement concluded .
