ILORIN, NIGERIA – Gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded a church in Kwara State late Saturday night, abducting an unspecified number of worshippers during a vigil.
According to security sources, the attackers stormed the church located along the Omu-Aran road in the Irepodun Local Government Area, firing sporadically to disperse the congregation. Several worshippers were whisked away into a nearby forest.
Local vigilantes and police tactical teams have since launched a manhunt for the abductors. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of victims taken.
The attack marks a worrying expansion of banditry into the North-Central region, which had previously been less affected by the wave of mass abductions plaguing the Northwest.
