PDP Govs Reject Wike Bloc’s Consensus Chair

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rejected the consensus national chairman candidate proposed by the faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, deepening the crisis ahead of the party’s national convention.

Sources close to the PDP Governors’ Forum revealed that the governors, during a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, resolved not to endorse the candidate put forward by the Wike bloc. The governors insisted that the party’s zoning formula must be respected and that any consensus arrangement must have broader input from all stakeholders.

“The governors are not comfortable with the imposition of a candidate. They want a transparent process that reflects the will of all party members,” a source familiar with the meeting said.

The Wike faction had reportedly settled on a candidate from the North-Central region to compete for the national chairmanship position, but the move was met with resistance from other party leaders who insist on an open contest at the convention.

The PDP National Working Committee has yet to comment on the development. The convention, scheduled for March 29–30, is seen as a crucial test of the party’s ability to unite ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers warn that failure to resolve the leadership crisis could further weaken the main opposition party.
