Philippines Declares State of Energy Emergency

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – The Philippine government has declared a state of energy emergency following a series of power grid failures that have plunged large parts of the country into darkness and threatened economic stability.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued the declaration on Wednesday, granting the Department of Energy emergency powers to address critical power shortages, fast-track repairs, and secure additional supply from both domestic and international sources. The move comes after three major grid disturbances in the past two weeks left millions without electricity, particularly on the main island of Luzon.

“This emergency declaration is necessary to protect our people and our economy. We cannot afford prolonged disruptions,” Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said.

The energy crisis has been attributed to a combination of aging power plants, insufficient reserves, and surging demand due to extreme heat conditions. Businesses, particularly manufacturing and service industries, have reported significant losses, while hospitals and essential services have been forced to rely on backup generators.

The government has assured the public that measures are being implemented to stabilize the grid within days. However, energy experts warn that deeper structural reforms will be needed to prevent future crises.
