A sensational rumour alleging that Nigerian billionaire and UBA Chairman, Tony Elumelu, underwent a DNA test that proved he is not the biological father of his seven children has been circulating widely on social media. However, an investigation by CDA News Nigeria has found these claims to be entirely false.
The fabricated story, which spread rapidly across WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages, claimed that the test results had led to the billionaire’s immediate separation from his wife of over 25 years, Dr. Awele Elumelu. Fact-checking reports have now confirmed that the story is baseless.
A review by the platform “News Africa” found that no credible Nigerian media outlet—including The Punch, Vanguard, and Premium Times—has reported on the alleged scandal. Furthermore, neither Tony Elumelu nor UBA has released any official statement regarding the matter, and there is no evidence of any marital crisis.
The Elumelus remain one of Africa’s most prominent couples. Dr. Awele Elumelu, a medical doctor and philanthropist, actively runs the Avon Women’s Foundation and frequently shares family moments online, showing no signs of a relationship breakdown. The couple has seven children together, including a set of triplets.
This rumour fits a common pattern of fake news, which creates dramatic narratives about wealthy and influential public figures to maximise engagement without providing any factual basis. Such misinformation can unfairly damage reputations and mislead millions.
