President Duma Boko has declared a state of emergency and announced unprecedented measures against South Africa, accusing Pretoria of failing to protect Botswana nationals from escalating xenophobic attacks.
The most dramatic decision is the immediate cutoff of electricity exports to several South African provinces—a move that risks worsening the already critical energy crisis in the neighboring country. In addition, the Botswana government has ordered the immediate closure of its borders and demanded the repatriation of all Botswana citizens currently living in South Africa.
A Betrayal of History
In a stern national address, President Boko invoked his country’s historical role in supporting South Africa’s liberation struggle, expressing profound disappointment.
“We helped you fight oppression, and today our children are being humiliated,” he declared, referring to the mistreatment and violence targeting Botswana nationals.
Regional Fallout
The suspension of electricity exports could have severe economic consequences, potentially escalating hostility between the two nations and undermining trade relations. South Africa relies heavily on imported power to supplement its struggling state utility, Eskom.
The measures are the strongest yet against South Africa since the end of apartheid. The situation is being closely watched by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as the closure of borders disrupts free movement and threatens regional stability.
As of press time, the South African government has not issued an official response to the escalating diplomatic crisis.
