Road to AFCON 2027 Begins Tuesday — CAF to Hold Historic Qualifying Draw in Cairo as Super Eagles Await Group Fate

The race to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations officially kicks off this week as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) prepares to conduct the qualifying group stage draw on Tuesday.

The draw for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda 2027 Qualifiers will be conducted on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT) at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

A total of 48 national teams, including the three co-host nations, will discover their group-stage opponents in the campaign to reach the finals. CAF has confirmed that the qualification phase will feature 48 teams competing for 24 available places at the expanded finals. Naija Punch News
The 48 teams will be split into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group securing tickets to the continental showdown.

The qualification matches will be played across three FIFA international windows — matchdays one and two between September 21 and October 6, 2026; matchdays three and four from November 9 to 17, 2026; and the final two rounds from March 22 to 30, 2027.

The 2027 tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with the opening match scheduled for June 19, 2027 and the final on July 17, 2027 — marking a historic first for East African football

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be among the teams eagerly awaiting their group opponents when the draw ceremony gets underway on Tuesday afternoon.
