Ex-Generals Fault Government Over Death of Former Army Spokesman in Captivity

Retired military officers have blamed the government for the worsening insecurity in the country following the death of former Army spokesman, Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar (retd.), while in captivity.

The ex-generals described the tragic incident as a painful reflection of the security challenges confronting Nigeria, stressing that no citizen should be left vulnerable to criminal elements, regardless of status or background.

They argued that the death of a retired senior military officer at the hands of kidnappers underscores the urgent need for a review of the nation’s security architecture and a more decisive approach to combating violent crimes.

According to them, government at all levels must intensify intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration, and equip security personnel with the resources needed to effectively tackle kidnapping and banditry.

The former military chiefs also called for greater political will in addressing the root causes of insecurity, including unemployment, poverty, and the proliferation of illegal arms.

Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who once served as Director of Army Public Relations, reportedly died after spending days in captivity following his abduction by suspected kidnappers.

His death has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for comprehensive security reforms aimed at protecting lives and restoring public confidence.

Many Nigerians have continued to mourn the late officer, remembering him for his years of dedicated service and commitment to the defence of the nation.
