The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has continued to advance discussions on Nigeria’s constitutional reform agenda during a high-level engagement in London.
While at the House of Commons, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, CFR, PhD, held discussions with representatives of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association on key constitutional amendment priorities currently under consideration in Nigeria.
According to Kalu, the meeting focused on critical national issues, including the Reserved Seats Bill aimed at enhancing women’s political representation, the proposed establishment of State Police, energy transition policies, and the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage for Nigerians.
The Deputy Speaker noted that the engagement provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen parliamentary cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom on governance, legislative reforms, and sustainable development.
He emphasized the importance of learning from global best practices as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and implement reforms that address the country’s evolving socio-economic and security challenges.
Observers say the discussions reflect the growing international interest in Nigeria’s constitutional review process and the potential impact of proposed reforms on governance, security, healthcare, and inclusive representation.
The engagement forms part of Kalu’s broader efforts to build support and awareness for legislative initiatives designed to deepen democracy and accelerate national development.
