Rt. Hon. Sir Sam Onuigbo has been elected President of GLOBE Legislators, an international network of lawmakers promoting environmental sustainability and climate policy, following his inauguration at the United Kingdom Parliament.
CDA News Nigeria reports that his emergence has attracted widespread congratulations from prominent Nigerians. A full-page tribute published in The Nation on July 10, 2026, and signed by professors, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and other public figures, praised his leadership and commitment to climate governance.
Onuigbo, a former two-term member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, is widely recognised for sponsoring Nigeria’s landmark Climate Change legislation. Before becoming the global President of GLOBE Legislators, he served as President of GLOBE Africa, where he championed climate-focused policies across the continent.
Before his political career, Onuigbo worked for 18 years at the United States Embassy, rising to the position of Supervisory Fraud Prevention Specialist. He has also received international recognition for his climate advocacy, including being listed by Business Insider among the Top 30 Global Leaders in Climate Action.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that supporters believe his election will strengthen GLOBE Legislators’ global environmental agenda. However, some aspects of his record referenced in the published tribute could not be independently verified at press time.
