Police Arrest Woman Over Forged Document Claiming OPay Shutdown

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC) has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Hafsat Abubakar, over the creation and circulation of a forged document falsely suggesting that fintech company OPay Nigeria Limited was shutting down its operations.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, disclosed the arrest during a press briefing at the NCCC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Iniedu, the arrest followed a formal petition submitted by OPay Digital Services Limited on August 31, 2026, requesting an urgent investigation into those responsible for creating and circulating the fraudulent document. The petition was routed through the office of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja.

He explained that the document had been designed to appear as an official communication from OPay Nigeria Limited, sparking concern among the company’s customers and the wider public before it was debunked.

Iniedu added that upon receiving the petition, the NCCC swiftly deployed digital forensic tools to examine the document and trace its digital footprint, a process that ultimately led investigators to the suspect.

The police say investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or had collaborators in the scheme.

CDA News Nigeria will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
