…15.8 Million Registered Voters to Elect 395 Lawmakers, Low Youth Turnout Expected
Moroccans are voting today, Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in parliamentary elections to elect members of the House of Representatives, a key vote that will shape the North African kingdom’s political direction for the next five years.

The ruling National Rally of Independents (RNI), which leads the current government coalition under Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, is seeking to repeat its 2021 victory. The party faces a stiff challenge from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which has gained momentum in recent weeks following the recruitment of Budget Minister Fouzi Lekjaa.
Other major contenders include the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), the Popular Movement (MP), and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS).
A key issue overshadowing the vote is the expected low turnout, particularly among young voters. According to election data, Moroccans aged 18-24 represent only about 4% of registered voters, despite making up a significant portion of the population. Youth unemployment stands at around 37%, and analysts warn that the political disengagement of Generation Z remains a major challenge for the country’s political system.
Campaigns have focused heavily on social and economic issues, including unemployment, purchasing power, public services, and preparations for Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The newly elected parliament will be tasked with forming a government majority capable of addressing these challenges.
