Patients of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, will no longer have to travel long distances for every psychiatric consultation and follow-up, following the launch of a new telepsychiatry service.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the service lets patients access specialist mental healthcare from their homes. The hospital says it is meant to ease the financial and geographical barriers facing patients who travel from distant parts of Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Aishatu Armaya’u, disclosed this on Wednesday at a strategic media engagement in Kaduna. The event also marked the official launch of the hospital’s new patient cards and other digital innovations.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Armaya’u said many patients and their relatives were forced to spend heavily on transportation, accommodation and feeding whenever they came for consultations and follow-up appointments.
For many families, the cost of repeated trips has made it hard to keep up with treatment. By moving some consultations online, the hospital hopes to make care easier to reach and help patients stay engaged with their treatment plans.
Mental health advocates have long called for wider use of technology to bring specialist care closer to patients, especially those far from major treatment centres.
CDA News Nigeria will provide further details on how patients can register for virtual consultations as they become available.
