The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, so that Nigerians living in North America can sit the exam without travelling to Nigeria.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the board announced the plan on its official social media platforms after its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, visited the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
According to JAMB, the proposed centre is meant to ease the cost and inconvenience for eligible Nigerians in Canada and across North America who must otherwise travel home solely to write the examination. It said the initiative would strengthen the link between Nigerians abroad and the Nigerian education system.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the board described the move as part of efforts towards taking Nigerian tertiary education to the world, and said it would create greater opportunities to showcase Nigerian tertiary education internationally.
The centre is not yet operational. JAMB said it is working towards setting it up, with operations expected to begin in 2027. The board has not given details on the number of candidates it expects, the fees or the exam logistics.
One report says Canada would join other countries where JAMB conducts foreign UTME centres, including the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Ghana and the Benin Republic.
The announcement was made through JAMB’s statement and not in a direct address by the Registrar. CDA News Nigeria could not find a direct quote from Aina on the reasons.
