Pedro Alliana has become president of Paraguay after the Senate impeached Santiago Peña over the collapse of Ueno Bank, which locked almost half the country out of their accounts.
CDA News Nigeria reports that 44 of 45 senators voted for impeachment, with one absent. Senate President Basilio Nunez declared Peña “guilty of poor performance in his duties.” Senators then appointed Alliana, the former vice president, who will serve until 2028.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that prosecutors placed Peña under house arrest minutes after his removal. He faces questioning on Saturday over alleged breach of trust, influence peddling and misappropriation of funds. Opposition lawmakers accuse him of a conflict of interest, which he denies. Until last year he held a stake in Grupo Vazquez, which controlled Ueno.
Hundreds celebrated outside Congress. “Justice has been done,” protester Jessica Aquino told AFP.
Alliana pledged to compensate almost three million affected depositors, including pensioners. Central Bank officials said advance payments of up to about $1,600 began Thursday for clients without loans who hold accounts at another institution.
The crisis has led to the exit of the Central Bank president and the interior minister, and eight Ueno executives have been arrested. Some 1,000 employees of ITTI, a Grupo Vazquez company in Argentina, were suspended for 30 days without pay.
Shortly before his removal, Peña urged Paraguayans to unite to “rebuild our institutions and restore trust.”
