16 Rivers Assembly Members, Speaker Defect from PDP to APC

Sixteen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers announced their cross-carpeting during Friday’s plenary session. Speaker Amaewhule attributed the mass defection to a “clear division” within the PDP at the national level.

Addressing the Assembly, Amaewhule stated, “Distinguished colleagues, very happily, let me announce that your speaker has decided and has indeed written to my ward chairman of my decision to leave the PDP. APC is my new party.”

The move significantly alters the political balance in the state legislature and marks a substantial gain for the APC in the oil-rich state. Further details on the implications of the defection are expected.
