The factional National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mallam Nafiu Bala Gombe, has dismissed the national convention held by the David Mark-led faction of the party as a “nullity” and an “affront” to the judiciary.
Bala declared the April 14 convention illegal on Friday in Abuja, stating that any actions taken by the coalition group are devoid of legal effect. He argued that the Mark-led coalition is not a legitimate member of the ADC and therefore lacks the legal standing to convene any congresses.
“As far as the duly constituted and legitimate leadership of the party is concerned, the coalition groups are not members of the ADC,” Bala said at a press conference.
He argued that the event was held in “flagrant disregard” of a subsisting Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 12, 2026, which he said is liable to be declared null and void. Bala also pointed to the absence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the convention as evidence that the process lacks official recognition. He added that the matter has assumed a criminal dimension, alleging the preparation of a false document bearing his forged signature.
The Mark-led faction, which also expelled Bala and others at the convention for alleged anti-party activities, has proceeded with its plans despite INEC withdrawing recognition from both factions in April following a Court of Appeal ruling. The leadership crisis is now before the Supreme Court, which has fixed April 22 for the hearing of an appeal filed by the Mark-led group.
