The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has emphatically reaffirmed its backing for international businessman Chief Eric Opah as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general election, dismissing mounting internal and external pressure over his emergence.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, who addressed journalists at the party secretariat in Umuahia on Monday, dismissed claims that Opah was imposed as a non-party member, insisting that he was a grounded member of the APC long before the primary election, and that the exercise was transparent and not manipulated in favour of any individual. He confirmed that Opah scored 125,977 votes to defeat former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Henry Ikoh, who polled 5,905 votes.
The APC fired back at the Labour Party, which had urged the APC to ensure that an alleged “governorship tussle” did not threaten peace in Abia. The party described LP as “evidently terrified of facing a vibrant opposition at the ballot box,” adding that differences of opinion within the APC were healthy and should not be misread as division.
However, APC founding member Hon. Mezie Chiekwe Esiaga had last week described the primary that produced Opah as a “sham,” warning that the party risked a disastrous outing in 2027 if aggrieved members were not pacified. He said he was preparing a letter to the President to draw attention to the matter.
Despite the internal tensions, the Abia APC maintained that it remains “united, focused, and firmly” committed to installing Opah as governor in 2027, while also securing all three senatorial seats, eight House of Representatives positions and 24 state assembly seats. Punch
