The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is today conducting its presidential primary election to select the opposition candidate who will challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Over 3.4 million ADC members across the country are voting in a direct primary, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former NESG Chairman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen competing for the party’s presidential ticket. The Sun Nigeria
The primary is taking place across all wards in Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, supervised by a committee headed by former Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Atiku, widely seen as the frontrunner, has played a leading role in uniting opposition forces under the ADC platform alongside former Senate President David Mark and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
Amaechi, however, remains confident of securing the ticket, questioning Atiku’s ability to translate primary victories into a general election win and stressing electability as the key factor.
Hayatu-Deen, the third contender, has called on the party to present what he describes as “a fresh candidate” with no political baggage, capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative.
The outcome of today’s primary is expected to reshape Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 polls.
