The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, has said no law entitles a sitting governor to eight years in office, CDA News Nigeria gathered.
Aondoakaa, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, spoke with journalists in Makurdi on Monday, insisting that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s re-election is not guaranteed ahead of the 2027 poll.
“The law does not give a governor eight years. It gives a governor four years. The other four years are what the people give you,” he said.
He dismissed the argument that no sitting governor had ever lost a re-election bid in Benue, predicting Alia would break that pattern by losing next year.
CDA News Nigeria reports that Aondoakaa cited insecurity, poor accessibility and uneven development across the state as issues he expects voters to weigh against the Alia administration.
He also argued that accessibility had historically determined governors’ re-election chances in Benue, noting residents value leaders who engage directly with communities.
Aondoakaa recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) before emerging as the PDP’s consensus candidate for the 2027 Benue governorship race.
