Two years after Nigeria’s #EndBadGovernance protests, some Kano residents caught up in the unrest are still nursing injuries and waiting for government help, CDA News Nigeria gathered.
Rabiu Gama, 25, said he was shot in the leg near Gwagwarwa Police Station on August 2, 2024, a day after protests began. He said a police officer he recognised later stood over him before walking away. Despite four surgeries, his leg has not fully healed.
Muhammad Alasan, 24, from Kano’s Dauwara area, has lived with a bullet fragment near his heart since the protests. He described his life as effectively on hold, appealing to the Kano State Government for urgent support.
Comrade Sagir Yerima, who represents affected families, said appeals and meetings with officials had yielded little. He said several victims still require urgent medical care.
The injuries form part of a wider dispute over casualty figures from the protests. Amnesty International reported at least 24 deaths across northern states, including about 10 in Kano, while the Nigeria Police Force rejected the figures in December 2024, calling the report inaccurate.
For families of victims, CDA News Nigeria reports, the immediate concern remains the welfare of survivors rather than the statistics debate.
